First Church of Christ, Scientist in Nashville has maintained a Reading Room in the downtown area since 1897 and they’ve occupied the current space since 1985. As we visit on a sunny afternoon, the light is glistening through the all-glass front. The atmosphere is fresh, open and inviting - just what you’d expect of an upscale bookstore these days.
Soft beige walls with crisp red accent sections. Comfortable, modern seating in coordinated fabrics. High ceilings, ample lighting and soft music playing faintly in the background. A beautiful original painting by church member Ceacy Hailey is featured on the back wall.
It’s a well- organized space with everything you’d expect to see in a Reading Room. Near the front door, one wall is devoted to periodicals and the latest merchandise. Bookcases for merchandise and bound volumes line one wall, separated by the sales counter. On the opposite wall is a computer workstation with Internet access and a study desk.
The store was recently re-painted, but the real change happened about 5 years ago. The major renovation was done by committee, with the aid of a decorator experienced in Reading Room décor.
According to Karen Childs, co-librarian, most visitors are new to Christian Science - people looking for Bibles and those curious about what’s inside a Christian Science Reading Room. People also come in looking for the Christian Science Monitor or to talk about spirituality. For the convenience of church members, the Reading Room offers merchandise for sale at church after the services.
In fulfilling Mary Baker Eddy's vision for the Reading Room, attendants are sharing and selling Science & Health to those who come. They have hosted lectures in the Reading Room, provided access to Annual Meeting via Internet, held a Holiday Sale which was advertised on Nashville Downtown Partnership’s web site. Another lecture will be held there soon in support of the tsunami relief effort. Ideas for future activities may encompass discussion groups on the Bible and Science & Health.
If you find yourself in Nashville, be sure to visit the Reading Room there - you’ll be glad you did.
