14117 B Memorial Drive Hours: Mon - Sat 10am to 4pm _________________________________ On a busy street in one of Houston’s upscale neighborhood shopping areas, signs on the street and in the window at Eighth Church’s Reading Room really grab your attention. These visually-dramatic signs, many designed by librarian Bobbe Kerr and a reading room attendant Anne Erwin, include such topics as "Resolve to put Christ first" and "Learn how to be safe from contagion". "We hope they’ll make you stop and think," notes Bobbe, "and you’ll come in to learn more. We have something special to offer and we need to make it known. We stand out and when we show it, people are attracted. They are looking for answers and they want to make their prayers work." The professionally-designed Reading Room has been located here for the past 3 or 4 years. It is visited by people of all walks of life, including an ever-changing audience from the auto repair shop next door. The Monitor and other CS periodicals are available in their waiting room. The Reading Room reaches out to the community in several ways: Inside the Reading Room, one can sit next to a large picture window and study in the quiet, serene environment. Bookshelves gently separate the study area from the sales area.
Bobbe also types sales slips on a computer and uses a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to place orders. Another simple trick is to adhere price tags to items with repositionable adhesive (found at Wal-Mart). In addition to storefront signage, she has also developed graphics for other Reading Room applications and enjoys sharing these tools with others. See them at http://www.mozartm.com/RR.htm
