Christian Science Nurses Training at Sunrise Haven

If you’re interested in Christian Science nursing, Sunrise Haven in Kent, Washington, is a great place to start. You can begin with a workshop to gain a broad overview of Christian Science nursing, and then follow with a series of training courses. Several courses are offered on-line for trainees outside the Seattle area.

The workshop, entitled "Cherishing One Another", is held as requested by individuals or branch churches. It introduces participants to basic nursing ethics, food needs and meal modifications. It also teaches basic lifting techniques and how to use mobility aids.

For further study, nurses training courses are taught on a one-on-one basis. Each course varies in length based on previous experience and individual need. Study includes such topics as:

  • Introduction to Nursing - centers around The Manual By-Law and "The Foundation for Christian Science Nursing", developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of Christian Science Nursing. (Offered on-line)
  • Ethics - outlines the ethical standards required. (Offered on-line)
  • Personal Care - provides instruction on assisting with personal cleanliness, lifting and mobility aids.
  • Bed Care - covers ways to ascertain the needs of those who are temporarily bedfast.
  • Wound Care - teaches useful skills in caring for wounds.
  • Foods - includes discussions of spiritual facts about food as well as practical applications.
  • Special Nursing Needs - helps prepare nursing students respond effectively to so-called "mental problems".
  • Managing Your Nursing Practice - outlines communication, administrative and supervisory skills needed.
  • Field Nursing - provides training for the care of individuals in their homes, including etiquette, communication with family members and legal issues.
  • Superintendent - covers skills and issue specific to the superintendent position. Offered to Journal-listed nurses only.

As a Christian Science nurse, it is important to cherish and nurture your innate nursing qualities (see Science and Health, page 395:17). These Christ-like qualities are imperative in caring for your fellow man. Your dedication to Christian Science and your understanding of God will lead you to take the necessary practical steps.
